Mary Swander, Iowa’s Poet Laureate, will give a retrospective reading based on her works Driving the Body Back, Farmscape, Vang, and Map of my Kingdom. She will also play music from a succession of the poetic dramas she is touring throughout the United States, from farmers’ barns, to major universities, to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the USDA.
The dramas draw on interviews and portraits of rural America, including immigrants in Marshalltown, Iowa. Swander will also discuss her founding and direction of AgArts, a non-profit designed to imagine and promote healthy food systems through the arts, and its developing farm-to-artist residency program. Thursday, June 14, 7:30pm FREE
