Joseph Kosinski & Only the Brave

Marshalltown son Joseph Kosinski will be at the Orpheum Theater Center on Saturday, June 16, to participate in an industry talk with Iowa filmmakers from 5 to 6 pm. That event is sponsored by Liz Gilman, leader of Produce Iowa, the state’s film office. There is no cost to attend this discussion, but it’s only for Iowa filmmakers.

At 7 pm that evening, Kosinski will introduce his movie “Only the Brave.” Following the movie showing, attendees are invited to stay for a Q&A session with the director.

MHS graduate Joseph Kosinski is a director whose uncompromising visual style has quickly made a mark in the filmmaking zeitgeist. His feature film debut, “Tron Legacy” for Walt Disney Studios, grossed over $400 million worldwide and was nominated for several awards including an Academy Award and a Grammy for the score by Daft Punk. For his sophomore feature, Kosinski created the science-fiction thriller “Oblivion” for Universal Pictures, starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman. With a score by M83, it grossed $288 million worldwide.

Kosinski’s third feature was the critically acclaimed action-drama “Only The Brave” for Black Label Media and Columbia Pictures. Released in 2017, the film stars Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, and Jeff Bridges. The movie showcases the compelling story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, one of the most elite firefighting teams in the country, and their battle with a fateful fire in Yarnell, Arizona.

Tickets for the movie are $10, and half of all ticket proceeds will be delivered to the Granite Mountain Film Fund, which benefits the firefighters and families noted in the movie. The showing is co-sponsored by Fairway Outdoor Advertising.

Kosinski is currently prepping “Top Gun: Maverick” for Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media.

He won three AICP Awards for his commercials Gears of War “Mad World,” Assassin’s Creed “Unity” and Destiny “Become Legend,” all of which are now featured in the Department of Film at the Museum of Modern Art. His recent ads have included “The Dig” for Sony and “Web of Fries” for Taco Bell.

Joseph received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University before graduating from Columbia University with a graduate degree in Architecture.

The movie showing is open to the public, but seating is limited to 150. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Orpheum Theater Center for $10.00
