History on Third Thursday: Memorializing the Fallen of the Great War by Ann Jackson
Thursday, November 21, 6:30pm
Marshalltown Public Library
Ann Jackson is beginning her seventh year as the Extended Learning Program instructor at Miller Middle School. In January of 2018, Jackson was one of 18 educators from across America who were selected for Memorializing the Fallen – a teacher professional development program from National History Day. Through this program, sponsored by the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission and the Pritzker Military Museum and Library, Mrs. Jackson attended virtual lectures, participated in discussions, and researched a Silent Hero from Marshalltown (a service member who never returned home). As a culmination of the Teacher Ambassador program, Mrs. Jackson traveled to Europe where she walked in the footsteps of history, making stops at several WWI American Battlefield Monuments Commission cemeteries and battle sites and monuments at Belleau Wood, Verdun, and Meuse Argonne. In her presentation, Mrs. Jackson will share insights and images from her travels and share the story of Pvt. Fredrick Eckstrom, a Silent Hero from Marshalltown.
