The first film in the Marshalltown Public Library’s female film icons series will be shown on Monday, January 29 at 2:00 p.m. in the library’s community meeting rooms. The theme for the winter/spring movie series is female film icons, films which exemplify the work of the actresses who starred in them.

Our movie license forbids the use of film titles in publicity; therefore, we invite you to play the movie guessing game!

The first film in the series is a 1953 Technicolor western musical film which stars Doris Day and Howard Keel. The film follows an alleged love story between two iconic figures in the Old West, Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok. Calamity Jane rides into Deadwood, South Dakota as a shotgun messenger on a stagecoach. Trouble ensues as Calamity attempts to get a Chicago singer to come to Deadwood to perform for the men in the Golden Garter, the local saloon.

Join our film critic, Tom LaVille, for a great discussion after the movie, as well as free popcorn and lemonade. This event is free and open to the public, aged 18 and over. For more information, or for the title of the film, please call the library’s Information Desk at 641-754-5738 ext. 4.

This event is sponsored by Friends of the Marshalltown Public Library.
