Collecting antique and vintage clothing buttons is a hobby that began during the Great Depression. Everyone had button boxes and tins holding generations of treasures and utility buttons. Studying buttons became an interesting pastime; selling buttons provided income to those who needed money; and the hobby has flourished.
This is the annual show for the Iowa State Button Society. Vendors come from all across the country. And, many collectors participate in competition where groups of buttons are judged by how well the group shows particular characteristics, such as the material from which they are made, or even simply their color. Buttons flourished beginning in the 18th century when men’s frocks were embellished with sometimes dozens of buttons. One can learn much history of society from studying buttons.
